Once, long ago, there lived a boy called Omar. He lived with his parents and
brothers in a small house in a small village. Omar's parents worked very hard
and so did his brothers, but Omar was very, very lazy. He hated working. He
always forgot to feed the chickens, he hated planting vegetables and he never
helped his parents. Omar: Hmm, I think I'm going to take a little nap under that tree…
4
When Omar turned twelve years old, his father told him that it was time he
helped his brothers look after the sheep. Omar's family had many sheep and
his brothers were good shepherds. Karim: You are old enough to help your brothers now. You must take good
care of the sheep. Do not disappoint me. Omar: I'll do my best, Father.
5
But Omar wasn't a very good shepherd at all. Many of his sheep wandered off
and his brothers did most of the work. Omar: I'm tired. I think I'm going to sit here for a while. Those silly sheep can
look after themselves…
6
Omar's father was very angry… Karim: Omar! You are a very lazy boy! Hassim, the sheepdog, is a better
shepherd than you are! Omar: I'm sorry, Father. I'll try to do better… Karim: That's what you always say, Omar!

One sunny day, Omar went to the market. Omar's mother gave him money to
buy fruit and vegetables. Mother: Now, Omar, this money is for food. Don't buy anything else with it. Omar: No, mother, I won't.
10
Omar loved going to the market. There were so many interesting things to
buy like spices, fruit, vegetables and delicious breads. There were also many
interesting people at the market like snake-charmers and magicians… Omar: Oh look at that! And that! Hmmm, I wonder what that strange man is
doing there…
11
Omar saw a tall man dressed in black clothes. The man was selling fishing
poles. Omar walked up to the man. Man: Hello, young man. Would you like a fishing pole? Omar: Uh, no thank you. I don't like fishing; it's even more boring than looking
after sheep.
12
Man: Ah, but this is a magic fishing pole. If you fish with this pole, you might
catch a special fish called a Wishing Fish. Wishing Fish make people's
wishes come true. Omar: Really? Wow! I want one! But wait, Mother gave me money to buy fruit
and vegetables… Oh, never mind. Here, give me a fishing pole!

When Omar returned from the market, he showed his fishing pole to his
mother. Omar: Look, mother! It's a magic fishing pole and it… Mother: Oh, Omar, stop it! You never do what I tell you! I'm very disappointed
in you! Stop talking and go to your room!
16
The next day, Omar went to the river to try his fishing pole. He wanted to show
his mother he was right. He waited and waited and waited. Then, suddenly, he
felt something pulling on the line. He tried to pull the fish out of the water… Omar: Urgh! What a big fish! We are going to have a wonderful dinner
tonight. Mother will be very happy for me!
17
But the fish wasn't an ordinary fish… Omar caught a Wishing Fish! Wishing Fish: Please, please let me go and I will make your wish come true!
Anything you want! Omar: Wow! Anything?
18
Omar thought about his wish… Omar: Make all the sheep disappear and I'll never have to work
again! Wishing Fish: Your wish is granted...
And, with that, the Wishing Fish disappeared into the water...

Omar was very excited when he woke up the next morning… Omar: Yay! I don't have to work again! I'm sure all those silly sheep are gone
now! I'm so lucky that I caught a Wishing Fish! Karim: Omar! Why are you still in bed? Go herd the sheep with your brothers! Omar: (thinking) Oh, no!
22
The days passed and Omar continued to look after the sheep with his brothers.
The only thing that changed was the weather. It was getting hotter and hotter
and hotter… Omar: Stupid fish! My wish didn't come true! Oh! It's so hot! I'd like some rain!
23
But the rain didn't come. Each day was hotter than the day before. The grass
stopped growing and the sheep had nothing to eat. Many sheep were sick…
Then, one night, Omar's father made an announcement… Karim: I have bad news. The sheep are sick and some are dead. We can no
longer sell wool at the market. We have very little money to buy food.
You boys must go to the nearby villages to look for work, otherwise we
will starve.
24
Omar was very sad and very worried. Then, he remembered his wish… Omar: Oh no! This is all my fault! I wanted the sheep to disappear and they
have! Now we have no money! I must go catch the Wishing Fish again!

The next day, Omar took the fishing pole and ran to the river… Omar: I hope I catch the Wishing Fish again!
28
Omar was shocked when he arrived at the river… It was as dry as a bone. Omar: Oh no! The rain stopped and the river dried up! All the fish are dead
and the Wishing Fish is gone!
Then, Omar started to cry...
29
He cried and cried and slowly the river filled up with his tears…The fish came
to life again... Omar was a very lucky boy because the Wishing Fish heard him
crying and swam to him… Omar: Oh Wishing Fish, you are back! You must help me, please! Wishing Fish: I did help you, Omar. You wanted the sheep to disappear. You
didn't want to work any more. I made your wish come true.
30
Omar: I know! But I was wrong! I was foolish! We have no sheep and
we can't sell any wool. We have no money, no food! I see now
that work is important! Please, change everything back to the
way it was! Wishing Fish: You learned an important lesson, Omar. All right, I'll change
everything back to the way it was…

Just then, the rain started. It rained and rained and rained and the grass
started to grow. The sick sheep grew strong and Omar learned to be a good
shepherd. He worked hard and soon the family had enough wool to sell at the
market. Omar was very happy and so was his family. Karim: You are a hard worker, Omar. We are very proud of you! Omar: Thank you, Father.
34
So, Omar never used his magic fishing pole again and he never made a foolish
wish again!
