Heidi is a girl from a small village in Switzerland. She lives with her Aunt Dete, but Dete wants to move to the city. So she takes Heidi to her Grandfather. He is an angry old man and lives alone in a little hut at the top of the Alps.
Dete: Heidi is going to live with you now.
Grandfather: I can’t look after her - I don’t know how!
Dete: Well… you must! Goodbye, now.

Heidi likes her new home. Grandfather makes a warm bed for her in the attic and then cooks dinner. They eat big pieces of bread with golden cheese and drink warm milk.
Heidi: Mmm… it tastes really good!
Grandfather: Then you must have some more!

The next morning Heidi gets up early. Downstairs she fi nds Peter, the young shepherd.
Grandfather: Do you want to go with Peter and the goats?
Heidi: Oh, yes! I do - very much!
Heidi loves the mountains… the tall trees, the fl owers and the animals. Peter and Heidi take the goats out together every day.

But then winter comes and there is a lot of snow. The children cannot go on the mountain any more.
Peter: Heidi, do you want to visit my grandmother? She is blind and she would like some company.
Heidi goes to Peter’s house the next day. She tells Grandmother lots of stories from the mountain. Grandmother likes the girl very much.

Two happy years pass on the mountain, but one day a visitor arrives. It is Aunt Dete!
Dete: I am taking Heidi with me to Frankfurt. She is going to live in a rich house, with a rich family.
Heidi:But I don’t want to go! I don’t want to leave Grandfather!
Dete:You must do as I say. The Sesemanns are waiting for you.

Dete and Heidi travel by train to the big city. Miss Rottenmeier, the housekeeper, meets them.
Miss Rottenmeier: This girl is very young, Dete! Do you go to school, little girl?
Heidi: I am eight years old and no… I can’t read yet.
Miss Rottenmeier: Only eight! Dete! She is a lot younger than Clara!

But Clara, the Sesemanns’ daughter, likes Heidi. Clara cannot walk and is in a wheelchair. Heidi makes Clara laugh. They become friends.
Clara: Please, Miss Rottenmeier, let Heidi stay!
Miss Rottenmeir: All right then, the child can stay.

That evening at dinner, Miss Rottenmeier explains the rules of the house to Heidi.
Miss Rottenmeier: You must always close the doors. You must go to bed before 8 o’clock…. You must wash your hands before and after breakfast, before and after…. Heidi, are you listening?
Clara: Oh, Miss Rottenmeier, Heidi fell asleep a long time ago!

Clara’s grandmother comes to Frankfurt. She likes Heidi very much and teaches her to read. Heidi likes grandmother too, but she is not happy in the city.
Grandmother: s something wrong, my dear?
Heidi: Oh, Grandmother! I miss the mountains and Grandfather so much! I want to go back!

The next week, something strange is happening at the Sesemanns’ house. Miss Rottenmeier is scared - she thinks there is a ghost! Clara’s father stays awake one night to catch it. But when the door opens, he sees Heidi!
Mr Sesemann: Heidi, it’s you! Why aren’t you in bed?
Heidi: I do not know…

The doctor soon arrives to see her. He is very kind.
Doctor: Now, Heidi, tell me. What happened?
Heidi: I had a dream… I have it every night. I am with my grandfather again, looking at the stars. But then I wake up and I’m always in Frankfurt!
Heidi starts to cry and can’t stop.

Doctor: The girl is sleepwalking! She needs to go home.
Mr Sesemann: But Clara is going to be very sad!
Doctor: It is the only way. She is very weak and unhappy; she is going to get much worse here.
Clara does not want Heidi to go, but she packs a big trunk with presents for her.

Heidi goes back home. She sees the mountains and the roads near her village and then the carriage stops. Heidi runs up the mountain.

Heidi gets to Grandmother and Peter’s hut first. Grandmother is very happy. Big happy tears are falling from her eyes.
Grandmother: Heidi is it really you?
Heidi: Yes, I am back! I am never going to leave again!

Then Heidi runs fast to the top of the mountain. Grandfather is sitting outside; Heidi falls into his arms.
Grandfather:You are home again Heidi!
Heidi: Oh, Grandfather, they were very good to me…. but I was unhappy! I wanted to be here with you!

Soon Heidi gets strong again. She goes up to the mountain with Peter and the goats every day.
Heidi: Peter, I can teach you to read. You can read stories to Grandmother!
Peter: No, I can’t do it – I can’t read!
Heidi: Oh, Peter it isn’t difficult – you just have to try!
And so, Heidi teaches Peter to read. Heidi is very happy to be back!

A few months later Heidi gets a letter from Clara - she is coming to visit! Heidi is very excited. But Peter is worried…
Peter: Oh, no! They are going to take her to the city with them again!

Clara and Grandmother arrive at the hut. Heidi and Clara are very happy together.
Grandfather: Clara could stay with us for a few weeks! What do you say, Mrs Sesemann? The mountain air is good for her!
Clara’s Grandmother: Oh… I don’t know…
Grandfather: It is our pleasure!

Heidi and Clara spend every day together. Peter is jealous. One afternoon, he sees Clara’s wheelchair outside the hut and pushes it down the mountain. It breaks into many pieces!

The next days, Grandfather carries Clara outside. The girl is very happy. She loves the flowers and the animals around her.
Clara: The mountain is beautiful, Heidi. It’s a pity I can’t walk!
Heidi: Why don’t you try? I can help you!
Clara stands up and… she takes a small step!

Peter sees Mr Sesemann. The boy is scared.
Peter:Are you a police officer? You can arrest me! I did it, sir… I pushed Clara’s wheelchair! But I am very sorry now….
Mr Sesemann: I am not a police officer; I am Clara’s father.
Clara’s Grandmother:We forgive you, Peter – you made a mistake… but that mistake made Clara walk! So, it’s OK!

Mr Sesemann: We must go back to the city now….
Heidi: Come and visit us again soon!
Grandfather: You are always welcome here – the Alps are your home too!
